Unwanted Leg Hair? Go to Chicago or Another City to get Laser Hair Removal
by Joyce Pendelthumb
Most women will spend a large amount of time each week in an age-old custom. Removing the hair from their legs is a part of everyday life for many women. Ladies will try just about anything to have smooth hair free legs, from waxes and depilatory creams to tweezing.
Did you ever stop to think there might be a better way to get the smooth legs that every woman strives for? Would you be surprised to find there is a procedure that will remove the hair from your legs for weeks on end and possibly permanently? The good news today is there is such a process and it is called laser hair removal.
Dermatologists have been performing laser hair removal procedures for quite some time. The first tests were completed around 1970 and by 1990, the procedure was introduced for commercial use. It was not long before laser hair removal was the most common procedure for hair removal.
What to Know
Laser hair removal procedures have come a long way and is a good solution for most people. However, there are a few things you should know before searching for a practitioner.
Over the years, this process has continually been perfected; however, the best outcome will be for those with light skin and dark coarse hair to remove. The reason for this is in the manner in which the laser works. An intense light passes through the outer layers of skin with no damage, until it reaches the melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives hair its dark appearance. Laser removal is activated when the light hits the melanin with heat, damaging the hair follicle and increasing the time it takes the hair to grow.
The first thing to do is check around for someone who has verifiable experience in laser procedures. Ideally, this will be a board certified physician with education regarding the latest laser treatments. It is not unusual for a nurse or assistant to do a treatment provided the trained professional remains with you through the treatment.
As with any type of procedure, there are risks associated with laser treatments. You may find that the hair is only partially removed or re-growth occurs at the same rate. You could also experience a change in skin tone around the area, sometimes darker, sometimes lighters. Rarely this skin lightening will be a long term or permanent occurrence.
Expectations
The first thing that should occur is a meeting between you and the dermatologist to assess your needs and wants. They should be very frank with you about what you can expect and explain that laser hair removal is not a onetime deal. If you are looking for permanent hair reduction, you can expect many treatments over the course of a year to accomplish this goal.
When you compare laser hair removal for the legs to the many other temporary fixes such as shaving, waxing and depilatory creams it is easy to see which comes out on top. Even when the hair removal is not permanent, you can reasonably expect weeks, months and even years of hair free living. What could possibly be better than that?
